The L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center is the nation’s largest organization serving gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. It operates with an annual budget of $50 million, a staff exceeding 300 and more than 3,000 volunteers. Founded in 1971, the Gay and Lesbian Center provides the widest array of social services available anywhere in the LGBT community. Some of our programs include : HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention with a full service clinic and pharmacy, Youth Services including a transitional living facility, Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Services, Legal Services, Anti-Violence programs, Family Services, programs for the Senior LGBT community, HIV & STD testing and prevention, a Cyber Center and Cultural Arts programming including live theater.

JOB SUMMARY: Vote for Equality is an L.A.-based grassroots organizing campaign working to promote marriage equality and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) rights. It is part of the new LAB (the acronym stands for Learn Act Build) that brings together three leadership development programs of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. The Project Manager will work closely with the LAB Director to manage and continually improve VFE’s successful organizing and educational program. The Project Manager will be responsible for managing the team that accomplishes volunteer outreach, recruitment and training activities, voter education and identification work, and volunteer leadership and committee development. The Project Manager will work closely with coalition partners and other LAB staff to promote successful organizing strategies and tactics in order to achieve campaign goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1) Manage the organizing staff and work with them to improve outreach and recruitment activities, including public events and festivals, community and campus meetings, phone banks and other one-on-one recruitment approaches
2) Develop volunteer leadership, provide volunteer training as needed, and build and guide campaign committees
3) Maintain volunteer and voter databases, and closely track VFE results, qualitative data, contacts and other follow-up work
4) Initiate, manage, and coordinate organizing projects as needed, including rallies, voter identification actions, and special events
5) Support coalition-building with organizers, constituencies, and organizations working on LGBT or other related progressive issues
6) Develop campaign tactics to enhance volunteer involvement and commitment and to help us gain insight into voter persuasion on the issue of same-sex marriage
7) Write and develop campaign materials (talking points, action kits, organizing guidelines, action alerts, fliers, brochures, etc.)
Represent Vote For Equality, the LAB, and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center at meetings and events
9) Work with organizing team to develop organizing strategies and pitch in and adjust as needed
10) Perform other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
1) Valid Driver’s License; proof of insurance; reliable transportation
2) Minimum 1 year experience political, community or labor organizing at the local, state, or national level
3) Minimum 1 year experience as a manager, preferably managing and motivating other organizers, and ideally creating or developing a high-functioning team of other organizers.
4) Knowledge of and experience working in the LGBT community.
5) Knowledge of Los Angeles community and experience working in communities of color preferred.
6) Excellent public communications skills and interpersonal relations skills, particularly listening skills.
7) Highly organized, detail-oriented and responsible self-starter.
Strategic thinking and planning abilities.
9) Knowledge of and commitment to working in a non-profit organization setting.
10) Computer and Internet literacy.
11) Team player with experience as a team leader (preferably campaign committee-building experience).
12) Willingness to work long and irregular hours periodically, as well as evenings and portions of weekends on a regular basis.
13) Demonstrated ability to work effectively with men and women of diverse ethnicities, race, age, gender identity, and sexual orientation in a multicultural environment.
