What has skateboarding given you? Now it’s time to giveback to skateboarding.
Share your passion for skateboarding with a new generation of youth in Los Angeles’ underserved communities and make an impact.
Through skateboarding gain valuable experience in community service, build your resume, pay back a student loan, or earn a stipend towards further education.
3 days a week. 3 hour sessions. 32 weeks.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Introduce a new generation to the benefits of skateboarding in a safe environment.
•Develop, plan, implement, and improve skateboarding programming.
•Supervise and participate in skateboarding, provide academic support, encourage and educate youth on benefits of a healthy and creative lifestyle through the lens of skateboarding.
•Event Planning: Develop and implement “end of session” demos or inter-school tournaments.
•Community Facilitator: Maintain positive relationships with school staff, parents, youth and community members. Encourage participation and help identify and train other volunteers who can have a positive impact on the program in the future.
•Service Learning Facilitator: discovering that you can make a difference in your world through action is a powerful lesson, and you will be the leader in making this happen in the community you serve.
•Engage with other skate instructors to share best practices and create inter-school opportunities.
•Be professional at all times, consistent attendance, on time and prepared. Be a role model and share your passion for skateboarding.
•Maintain maximum membership levels at all times. Encourage attendance and track and turn in attendance daily.

AND THE DETAILS:
You will be hired by Coach Across America (CAA) to teach skateboarding to kids from underserved communities through NVISION’S afterschool skateboard program. CAA, a proud member of AmeriCorps, is the first nationwide effort to mobilize highly trained coaches as Sports-Based Youth Development (SBYD) experts. CAA selects and recruits young people with a passion for sports, and places them as AmeriCorps “coaches” in community- and school-based sports programs in our nation’s most underserved communities. The host sites for these coaches are nonprofits and schools whose athletic activities are often the lifelines to success for their neighborhood youth. CAA contracts with the host sites and helps them to recruit, supervise and evaluate coaches to meet AmeriCorps standards. Following extensive pre-service training, coaches will invest their talent and energy to promote health and nutrition, educational success, civic engagement, and positive personal and social development among youth, addressing some of the most pressing issues facing our youth: childhood obesity, academic failure and risky behavior.WHAT YOU WILL DO
During your year of service, you will be assigned to NVISION, a community based SBYD organization which provides quality afterschool programs to provide youth the skills to pursue a successful and purposeful life. While working with NVISION your primary role will be as Club Leader for a group of youth participating in the afterschool skateboard program. However, no day will ever be the same and you can expect to wear many different hats and will acquire various, exciting skill-sets during your service year.During your year of service you will receive comprehensive and ongoing training from experts in the SBYD field. You will also become certified in Sports-Based Youth Development. This certification will help you integrate positive youth development principles into your coaching and is a marketable tool for your career upon completion of your service.
ELIGIBILIGITY REQUIREMENTS:
•United States citizen or permanent resident alien
•Ability to commit to 450 hours of service (to be completed within 9 months)
•A high school degree and/or college degree
•Passionate about skateboarding and intermediate on-board skills.
•A strong interest inservice-learning, civic engagement, and community development
•A commitment to sports as a tool for youth development
•Previous experience volunteering in a youth development framework a plus
•Strong communication and interpersonal skills among diverse constituents
