    POSITION: Various temporary summer instructor positions (high school academic math and science)

    LOCATION/DATES:
    UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Southern California (June 23 — July 30)
    Stanford University (June 30 — August 4)
    Training week for all sites (June 18 — June 22)

    ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
    The Summer Math and Science Honors Academy (SMASH), a program of LPFI (www.lpfi.org), is a rigorous and innovative education program that increases opportunities for high school students of color to excel in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at the college level for five weeks each summer. SMASH Scholars attend a five-week summer residential program on a college campus for each of three summers (after their 9th, 10th and 11th grade years) and also receive year round academic support including SAT prep, college counseling, financial aid workshops and other activities to ensure continued academic success.

    The goals of SMASH are to:

    - Prepare students from underrepresented communities to be competitive in science, technology, engineering, and math-related studies (STEM) at competitive universities;
    - Educate students about graduate school opportunities and encourage them to eventually attend in order to further pursue professional, STEM-related studies or careers; and
    - Encourage a sense of social responsibility through promotion of critical thinking, civic awareness and leadership.

    Current SMASH sites include: UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA and University of Southern California.

    KEY DATES:
    Training for all sites June 18-22, 2012.
    Program Dates: SMASH USC, UCLA and Berkeley June 23-July 30, 2012. SMASH Stanford June 30-Aug 4, 2012.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    - Commitment to the Summer Math & Science Honors Academy’s mission and goals is essential
    - Previous success working with students from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds
    - A minimum of two years subject area teaching experience and/or professional STEM work experience as approved by Lead Instructor
    - Desire to teach with technology and improve technological skills
    - Excellent classroom management and teaching skills
    - Experience in collaboratively developing curriculum with emphasis on experiential project based learning and AP pedagogy
    - Native Spanish fluency desired
    - 4 year degree from an accredited university

    Note: teaching credential not required

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    - Instruct one (UCLA, USC) to three (Berkeley, Stanford) sessions on the focus subject area during designated times; Tues, Thurs (8:30 am — 5:00 pm)
    - Attend the following sessions:
    - Instructor Professional Development & Curriculum Training – April 28 and May 26, 2012
    - SMASH Staff Training Week — June 18 through June 22, 2012
    - Community Meetings; Wed (3:45 — 4:45pm)
    - Weekly staff meetings; Wed (4:45 — 5:30 pm)
    - SMASH Recognition & Exhibition Event — July 28 (Berkeley, UCLA); August 4 (Stanford)
    - Staff Debrief — July 30 (Berkeley, UCLA, USC); August 6 (Stanford)
    - Work collaboratively with other instructors under the direction of Lead Instructor
    - Design and administer pre-and post-test assessment of mastery of subject skills and concepts
    - Design a syllabus detailing assignments, readings, and assessments to be given to students during first week of class using the curriculum scope and sequence developed by SMASH and focused on Energy as a unifying theme (must be completed before the first day of instruction)
    - Deliver all lesson plans to Lead Instructor by completion of program
    - Set up and maintain a class record of attendance, assignments, and grades in designated student information system
    - Complete grade book and final assessment requirements
    - Complete staff surveys and actively engage in all program evaluation activities
    - Build rapport with and maintain communication with the Residential team, particularly in regards to scholar behavior (positive or negative)
    - Inventory, package and return all equipment and supplies
    - Position requires walking, sitting and standing day to day. Climbing stairs, running and participation may be required during community activities. Lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs of supplies is required up to 2/3 of the time.
